Bupleurum: A great branching filler flower or green

One of my favorite filler flowers is Blupleurum. Bupleurum is a delicate and versatile flower that makes for a great filler or green in floral arrangements, bouquets, and centerpieces. Belonging to the Apiaceae family, it is also known as “baby’s breath of Italy” and has the common names thoroughwax and hare’s ear. Native to the Mediterranean region, this flowering plant blooms in late spring and early summer, with small, star-shaped flowers that are usually yellow to lime green in color, though some varieties may have white or pink blooms.

With thin, wiry, and branched erect stems, bupleurum is perfect for adding texture and volume to floral arrangements. The distinctive leaves that circle around the stem make it a unique and interesting addition to any bouquet. It also looks great when dried and is an excellent flower for use in mixed bouquets.

One of the wonderful qualities of bupleurum is its ability to blend well with a variety of flowers, both in terms of color and texture. It pairs particularly well with roses, lisianthus, dahlias, and other blooms, adding a light and airy touch to any arrangement. It also looks great with jewel tones and white colored flowers. Because of its branching nature, it is excellent for adding support to other flowers. I like to start my bouquets with a few stems of bupleurum as a base. The wiry branching stems are perfect for weaving other flowers into.

Bupleurum is also a long-lasting flower, making it a great choice for wedding bouquets and other special occasions. It is easy to care for and has a vase life of seven to ten days. Bupleurum is grown as a cool season annual, meaning it tolerates cold temperatures and can be started in the garden in the fall or early spring but only lives for one year. Although it is an annual flower it often reseeds. I recommended the use of netting for support when growing it for cut flowers.

At Chesapeake Flower Exchange, many of our growers plant it in succession so that we have several months of available stems for harvest.

Apart from its use in floral arrangements, bupleurum has also been used in traditional medicine to treat various ailments, including respiratory and digestive problems.

Overall, bupleurum is a beautiful and versatile filler flower that adds a touch of elegance and whimsy to any floral arrangement. Because it is primarily green in color it is also used as greenery in arrangements. Whether used on its own or combined with other flowers, bupleurum is a great choice for any occasion. Try it, I suspect it will become one of your favorites too!
